I have been dreaming about this recipe for Chocolate Sugar Cookies since last Valentine’s Day. I was knee-deep in butter, sugar, and flour making chocolate shortbread when I got the idea of having that recipe mingle with my favorite Valentine’s Day Sugar Cookie. After a few practices, I had the butter and sugar, along with the Dutch cocoa ratios worked out, and this amazing little cookie was born.
When Julie from The Little Kitchen reached out about joining to help raise funds for Cookies for Kid’s Cancer, I immediately said yes, and knew that this recipe would be perfect. Secretly I was hoping she was going to ask us to participate again, this year, as we enjoyed being part of it last year.
I am not going to go into a lot of details about why this is important to us (you can read about it here) but I will say that the world needs a little more happiness and if sharing rich chocolate sugar cookies helps us get a little closer to finding a cure for childhood cancer, then I will bake hundreds of cookies to do so.
Did you know that cancer is the #1 cause of death of children by disease in the U.S.? There are 40,000 U.S. children actively battling cancer right now. With less than 4% of the National Cancer Institute’s budget going to all childhood cancer combined, I knew it was important for me to get involved.
Help us make a difference by donating to Cookies for Kids’ Cancer! Our goal is to raise at least $3000. Because these three companies: Dixie Crystals, Mediavine, and OXO have each pledged to match our donations raised through this campaign up to $3000!!!
We hope you will also enjoy these Valentine inspired recipes from our Food Blogging friends who are making a difference too.

Recipe: Chocolate Sugar Cookies
Ingredients:
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 egg yolk
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup Dutch-process cocoa
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- extra Dutch cocoa for cutting out
How To:
- Mix together the butter and sugar until fluffy. Scrape the bowl.
- Add the egg and egg yolk and mix until light; about 2 minutes. Add the vanilla extra and mix just to blend together.
- Sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Add to the butter mixture and mix until blended.
- Wrap the dough in wax paper and place in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes or overnight.
- Preheat the oven to 375. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Divide the dough in half. Lightly dust a counter with cocoa powder and roll out one half of the dough to about 1/8″ thick. Cut into desired shapes.
- Place the cookies onto the parchment paper.
- Bake the cookies for 8 – 10 minutes until slightly firm but not too crisp.
- Remove from the oven, allow to cool for 5minutes on the baking sheet. Then remove the cookies and place on a cooling rack.
- Decorate with your favorite frosting or just enjoy.
- Serve.
- Eat.

Thanks for sharing the recipe! It is looking like I will be trying these out today So do you not need to let the dough chill at all before baking? I feel like most chocolate chip cookie dough does need to chill but I have come across a couple recipes where it really doesn’t and is better without chilling

We are usually impatient and tend not to let dough chill too often! Has worked for us. ;)
