Third week of

the Eat Local Challenge.  I actually got to spend the morning at the Ferry Plaza Farmer’s Market today.  It has been years since I have really shopped this way and I really enjoyed it.  I was able to get most of this weeks groceries there and the reminder I got at Whole Foods.  90% of the groceries were local and/or organic.

A weeks worth of groceries two bottles of sustainable wine from Sonoma County came up to $90

This week’s menu will include:

Mushroom Soup

Chicken Soup

Grilled cheese & baguettes

Pasta with Spinach

Green Salads

Zucchini bread

Sausage Lasagna

Lamb & chickpea stew

*Please keep in mind when I am writing the weekly menu I do not put breakfast nor lunch down, but, the price of groceries does include both of these additional daily meals.

Cream of Fennel Soup

I stumbled upon TS & JS’s food blog, [eatingclub] vancouver and drooled over their Cream of Fennel Soup – YUM!  After, last nights over indulgence, we decided it was a good night for soup – soothing soup!

Pre-wedding cocktail party ..

Eat Local Challenge 2008, cocktail party, Deutz Champagne, Organic food, salmon dip, fig tarts, blue cheese, sweet walnuts, lavash crackers

……last night we took a little cocktail party over to Andy and Jeff’s house.  They are getting married on tomorrow and we wanted to give them something in celebration of their special day.  These guys are the the couple who have everything and really don’t need anything, as well they did not want anything.  As they love food and wine, we decided to put together a little soiree.  In keeping with our Eat Local Challenge, I am proud to say everything on the menu was local, and/or organic, except for the bottle of Deutz Champagne!  I wish the photo was better as the food was really fantastic;  but, we wanted to have it dimly lite for the romance!

The menu was:

Smoked Salmon Dip w/crudites

Fig & Blue Cheese Tart

Lavash Crackers (fennel/garlic/smoked pimento, cracked pepper/sea salt and rosemary/sea salt) with Tapenade

Sweet meringue nuts

Pancetta & Tarragon Chicken

We have had a pretty long week which did not end on a great note – problems at work, servers, demanding clients, etc…  not what you want for a Friday.  We left the office early and wanted to just get home, open a bottle of wine and relax.  Cooking helps me relax and comfort food was definitely in order.

Butternut Squash Soup

When I planned out our Eat Local menu last weekend it was chilly out and we had commented on the way to our bike ride that Fall was definitely here and it was time to make “get cozy food”.  Good old San Francisco weather surprised us with warm sunny weather.  Regardless we have been enjoying wonderful soups all week.

I have to apologize for such a short post.  It is late, I am tired, spin class kicked our butts!  So here it is …. Eat Local Challenge, Day 3 for us.

Late night, late dinner.  I love cauliflower soup and Lenny likes it after tonight.  I have yet to find the perfect recipe;

Didn’t We say NO MEAT ..

L. rode 100+ miles today & NEEDED a sausage or two (shouldn’t that be my line (wink wink)) with his veggie dinner I had planned. Since we are on the tail end of our Eat Local Challenge, we did a quick run to pick up some wonderful Niman Ranch HOT Italian Sausage (once again, I am a sucker for the packaging). Earlier in the evening I had roasted some zucchini, dry-farmed tomatoes, shallots, garlic and fresh pimento (which was picked up at Farmers Market today). Tossed together some HOT pasta with some fresh and local Ricotta, I found, and spooned the roasted veggies over the top. Nice Italian comfort food.

Bok Bok …

We have decided to take part in the Eat Local Challenge. I do not believe I realized how hard it was going to be, when I talked L. into it, until I actually signed up for it – eeks!! I say this next statement in a few deep breaths; I hope we don’t fail, I hope we live up to my expectations as well as the local challenges and ….I can not believe I committed to this without shopping first. It was be a challenge as well as we have family in town for a week and a half, which will require some eating out but we will be trying to have them over for our “local cooking” as much as possible as well! Anyhow, tonight I had to go with what we had in the house, which I am proud to say was “organic”, not sure how local even though I did purchase at Wholefoods. Regardless, we are committed to giving this challenge our best!

Tonight, I sauteed bok choy with some shallots, garlic, some hot peppers (from our garden) and Portbellas. Light, yummy and somewhat (a very little) local!
